When do you need to identify a car from a picture?
You spotted something interesting on the street. You're browsing a listing with no model name and suspicious photos. You inherited a garage find. You're settling a bet. The AI reads the same design cues an enthusiast would — grille, lights, body lines, badges — and tells you what it sees, including how confident it is and why. For mystery cars that stump the AI, communities like r/whatisthiscar are the human fallback.
How to get an accurate identification
- Use a wide, clear angle — front or rear three-quarter shots carry the most design information.
- Add a second angle if unsure — up to 4 photos of the same car sharpen the answer, especially for facelift vs pre-facelift.
- Read the confidence level — high means the cues are unambiguous; medium or low means look at the cues list and verify.

- Is the car identifier free?
- Yes — free with no signup, within a fair daily limit per visitor. Photos are analyzed in memory and never stored.
- How accurate is it?
- Make and model recognition is strong for mainstream cars built since the 1990s. Exact years and facelift generations are genuinely hard — that's why every answer includes a confidence level and the visual cues used, instead of false certainty. Adding a second angle usually sharpens the result.
- Can it tell the exact year?
- Usually a year range, not one year — most cars look identical across a generation. The VIN's 10th character encodes the exact model year; our free VIN decoder reads it.
- Does it work for motorcycles, vans and older cars?
- Yes for most vehicle types — cars, vans, pickups, motorcycles. Very rare classics and heavily modified vehicles can stump it; the confidence level will say so honestly.
- What photo works best?
- A wide front or rear three-quarter shot in daylight, with the whole vehicle in frame. Badges, grilles and light signatures carry the most information; extreme close-ups or dark photos carry the least.
- Is my photo stored?
- No. Photos are processed in memory and discarded — never saved, shared, or used for training.
